The problem

Board conflict rarely goes away on its own. It moves to email, then to side conversations, then to members. By then it is about people, not the issue.

When to run it

At the first sign of a standoff: the same argument at two meetings, or a heated email thread.

The steps

  1. Talk to each side privately first

Call each person within a few days, one at a time. Listen more than you talk. Ask: "Help me understand what matters most to you here." Do not argue the point or promise an outcome.
