The problem

Most committees meet, talk, and leave with nothing assigned. The same two people do all the work, and everyone else stops showing up. The board wonders what the committee is for.

When to run it

When you take over a committee, or when the work has stalled for two meetings in a row.

The steps

  1. Get the charge in writing

Before your first meeting, agree with the board on what the committee is for, what it can decide alone, and when it is done. Write it on one page using the Committee Charter and Chair Job Description. If the board cannot say what it wants, ask them to decide before you recruit anyone.
